Phuket is one of the most pricing-sensitive resort destinations in Asia. The dry season delivers the postcard version — flat seas, full restaurants, every operator running at capacity. The wet season delivers a quieter, cheaper, often surprisingly pleasant version, with the obvious caveat that the weather is unpredictable.
Knowing which version you are booking, and pricing accordingly, is the single most useful piece of Phuket planning.
The Seasonal Rhythm of Phuket
The dry, high season runs November through April. Skies are clear, the Andaman is calm, and the entire island is in full operation. The southwest monsoon dominates from May to October, with the heaviest rain typically July and September. Conditions in May, June, and October are often better than the reputation suggests — short, sharp afternoon storms rather than continuous rain.

Events and Festivals That Drive Demand
Phuket Vegetarian Festival (September to October)
Nine days of Taoist observance with dramatic street processions in Phuket Town. It draws regional and Chinese diaspora visitation in a window that would otherwise be deep low season. It will not fill the island, but it lifts Phuket Town hotels significantly.
Songkran (April)
Thai New Year, 13 to 15 April, is celebrated island-wide with the famous water fights. Domestic Thai bookings spike, and the long weekend extends Phuket's high season.
Loy Krathong (November)
The festival of light. Quietly beautiful, particularly along Phuket's beaches and in the Old Town. Falls on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month.
When to Visit for Value
May and September are the deepest value windows of the year. Five-star resorts that quote $800 a night at Christmas can be available at $300 in these months. The risk is weather — but most travellers find conditions far better than the rate would suggest.
When to Visit for the Experience
January and February are the gold standard — perfect weather, full operations, and the entire Andaman in form. The price tag matches. November is a credible alternative if you can travel before the festive premium kicks in.
Phuket's pricing curve is steeper than most travellers realise. Moving a trip from late December to mid-January saves a meaningful amount. Moving to late November saves more again. Pure festive timing is the most expensive choice on the calendar.
How to Time Your Booking
For festive season, book by July. For peak January and February, by October. For monsoon-season value plays, the 30 to 45 day window is consistently the best — resorts firm up pricing as they read their actual booking pace.
Phuket rewards travellers who plan around the monsoon rather than fearing it. The shoulder months are some of the best value beach-resort weeks available anywhere in Asia.
